Wall color could aid success of New Year’s resolution

It’s mid-January. How’s your New Year’s resolution going? Believe it or not, the color of your walls can impact the odds for your success – especially with regard to sticking to that weight-loss plan, new fitness routine, or stress reduction process.

Psychologists, healers and color experts all reference the effect of color on people. And studies have shown, for example, that predominant reds and oranges stimulate appetite. You’ll note that many restaurants use these colors for their signage to attract customers.

If your goal is to lose weight, you’ll want your kitchen and dining areas to be painted in calmer tones of light blues or pale greens to take on a feeling of freshness and lightness. Of course, if you have finicky eaters in the household, you might want to set their plates on red, oranges or magenta placemats.

For those wanting to pump up their fitness routine, a bold-colored wall can provide a boost of energy. While four walls of red could be overwhelming, having one wall of bright red, sunny yellow or vivid purple could generate a sense of power, strength and vitality.

Those in need of stress reduction also can benefit from a change in space. Stark white walls may not be the most calming. Indeed studies show that the colors of nature actually prove to be helpful to those who need to steady their nerves and find an inner peace. Blues, greens, beiges and browns – the colors of sand and sea or hills and trees – may be the best options.

While studies show certain colors affect people in certain ways, everyone is not the same. What most people find to be calming actually may be stimulating to another, so it’s always wise to do your own individual research. These are some general observations.

Whatever colors you choose, remember that shades, textures and tones also can impact those who live and work in the space.
